When the Best Get Laid Off, Students Lose

May 24, 2011 posted by StudentsFirst

Teacher layoffs under the "last in, first out" model are hurting students and taking our best teachers out of the classroom. It's time to fight layoffs based on seniority rather than teacher effectiveness.

Christine Simo thought she had it all: eager students, proven results, engaging lessons, and the respect of faculty and parents. Yet due to a Nevada policy that fires teachers based on seniority, budget cuts forced Christine out despite her outstanding record.

The firing was a shock for colleagues and parents who have spoken out on her behalf. Now it's your turn to raise your voice and make sure that great teachers like Christine can stay in the classrooms that need them most.

Share Christine's story with your colleagues and friends.
