Our mission in New York
StudentsFirstNY will be New York's leading voice for students who depend on public education for the skills they need to succeed, but who are too often failed by a system that puts special interests, rather than the interests of children, first. We believe that the students of New York State and New York City cannot wait one minute more for an end to broken policies that stand in the way of ensuring a quality teacher in every classroom and an end to the failed politics that have only served to delay meaningful fixes to the problems in our schools. We believe in policies that will make a real difference and improve education for students all across our state:
We Believe: Great teachers can make a tremendous difference for students of every background; all children deserve outstanding teachers.
Inside our schools, a great teacher is the single most important factor in a child's education. While there are many factors that influence a student's opportunity to learn, a great teacher can help any student overcome those barriers and realize their full potential. For this reason, we believe in doing everything we can to make sure teachers are supported and all schools are able to hire and retain the best teachers possible.
We Believe: Every child, regardless of their zip code, deserves to attend a great school; all families should have quality school options available.
In too many cities and neighborhoods, parents are unable to enroll their kids in the best public schools -- there just aren't enough seats. We're working to make sure all families have a range of high quality schools to choose from, because our kids shouldn't have to rely on a lottery or the ZIP Code of their home to get a great education.
We Believe: Public education dollars belong where they make the biggest difference; we must ensure schools focus resources on programs that help kids achieve
Tax dollars should go toward programs that help our kids learn, ensure their long-term success, accurately evaluate effectiveness, and produce results -- not layers of bureaucracy that only serve to protect the needs of special interests.
We Believe: Parent and family involvement is vital to increased student achievement, but the quality of our schools has an impact on the entire community; we all must be engaged in the effort to improve our schools.
Parental engagement is critical to ensuring student success, so we'll work to empower parents and help families get more involved in their child’s education. But lasting reform requires that whole communities get involved in the fight for better schools. Without a widespread, concerted movement that engages broad-based support, we will be unable to make the bold changes our schools need to succeed.
